Postal problem in Virginia
Federal Member for Spence, Matt Burnell has called on Australia Post to make significant improvements to its mail services in Virginia.
Residents have raised concerns regarding the inability to have mail delivered to their home and the lack of Post Office (PO) Boxes available.
“Many residents have advised me that for years now they have had to collect their mail weekly from a family or friend due to the mail service in Virginia… this is simply not good enough”, said Mr Burnell.
Mr Burnell conducted his own survey within the suburb of Virginia, receiving close to 200 responses from residents in the area.
Over the weekend, Mr Burnell continued his campaign to bring a better mail service to Virginia by hosting a number of community meetings alongside State Member for Taylor, Nick Champion MP.
“I have written to the CEO of Australia Post to raise these concerns. In response, they are intending to hold a ‘poll’ in the original township while excluding the now-established developments in Virginia,” Mr Burnell said.
“While they have acknowledged that there are shortcomings in their services, Australia Post are still missing the mark.
“This is why Nick Champion and I have held a number of community meetings and are running our own survey to pass onto Australia Post, from the residents they are not canvassing.
“Virginia is still growing but is already an established and vibrant community. Residents and local businesses deserve to have a present and reliable mail service.”
While Mr Burnell’s survey is still ongoing, he will continue to be in and around Virginia garnering support, ahead of a sit-down meeting with Australia Post in Canberra in the coming weeks.
